Kansai on Two Plates
5 Days ・ Kyoto, Nara, Osaka
From Kyoto’s quiet traditions to Osaka’s vibrant food scene.

Kansai, beyond the surfa
Kansai shows a different side of Japan — where tradition runs deep and the atmosphere shifts from place to place. Walk Kyoto’s quieter backstreets, step into the stillness of Nara’s ancient woods, then dive into Osaka’s lively food scene, where energy, flavor, and late nights take over. It’s a region defined by contrast — and that’s exactly what makes it so memorable.

Start in southern Kyoto, where tradition meets everyday life.
Begin early at Fushimi Inari Shrine, walking beneath its torii gates before the crowds arrive. Then continue into Fushimi Momoyama, where you’ll explore local street food, sake spots, and neighborhood favorites. It’s a slower, more local introduction to Kyoto—well removed from the usual tour buses.

Start with a Hozugawa riverboat ride through forested valleys just outside Kyoto. Then visit Kinkakuji before stepping away from the crowds at quieter temples like Koetsu-ji and Genko-an. In the evening, settle into a seasonal kaiseki meal at a traditional ryokan, with the option to unwind in a private onsen before returning to the city — or exploring Kyoto at your own pace after dark.
Nara begins where most tourists stop — among the deer in Nara Park. But your path goes further. After greeting the famous locals, head into Kasugayama Forest, where moss-covered trails and quiet shrines set a slower pace. Visit Kasuga Taisha, pause at a teahouse, and, if time allows, explore lesser-visited temples like Yakushiji or Toshodaiji. A quieter, more reflective side of Nara.

Shift gears as you step into Osaka’s fast-paced food scene. Start at Kuromon Market, then explore quieter neighborhoods like Nakazakicho or visit Sumiyoshi Taisha for a change of pace. In the evening, dive into Osaka’s street food culture with a guided tour through local areas like Tenma and Tenjinbashisuji — where small shops, packed alleys, and local favorites capture the city at its best.

After Osaka’s energy, slow things down with a walk through Kyoto’s eastern hills. Start at Ginkakuji, then follow the Philosopher’s Path, passing quiet temples and seasonal scenery along the canal. Stop for a light lunch, then continue toward Honen-in or Nanzen-ji at your own pace. A simple, unhurried way to wrap up the trip.
