Discover Hokkaido

  • Grey

Ease into your time in Hokkaido with a first day in Hakodate, one of Japan’s most distinctive port cities. The Bay Area blends a subtle Western influence with local charm—red-brick warehouses, waterfront views, and a relaxed, open feel you won’t find in most of Japan.

Stroll along the harbor, stopping for local pâtisseries and Hokkaido’s famous dairy treats, from rich cheesecakes to seasonal soft cream. For something savory, try Hakodate-style shio ramen at a local favorite like Ajisai, or go casual with a quirky burger from the beloved Lucky Pierrot.

As evening sets in, ride the Hakodate Ropeway for sweeping views from Mount Hakodate—widely considered one of Japan’s most beautiful night scenes.

Start the day at Hakodate Morning Market with a fresh kaisendon and a bit of light grazing as you explore the stalls. From there, head to Goryokaku Park—one of Japan’s most unique historic sites—best appreciated from above at the observation tower, where its star-shaped design comes into full view.

For lunch, stop by Kantaro, a local sushi favorite that started right here in Hakodate. In the afternoon, make your way toward Sapporo, with the option to break up the journey with a relaxing overnight stay near Lake Toya.

Once in Sapporo, settle into the city with a lively dinner of jingisukan (grilled lamb), a Hokkaido specialty best enjoyed in a casual, energetic setting.

  • Spend the day getting to know Sapporo’s core highlights, from Odori Park and the historic Clock Tower to panoramic views from the TV Tower. A walk through Nijo Market offers a more local side of the city, with fresh seafood and casual stalls perfect for a relaxed lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the Sapporo Beer Garden to sample Hokkaido’s well-known brews in a setting that reflects the city’s brewing heritage. As evening sets in, head into Susukino and wander through Ramen Alley, where a bowl of rich Sapporo-style miso ramen is the perfect way to end the day.

Head to Otaru, a historic port town known for its nostalgic charm. Start with a quiet canal cruise past old stone warehouses, setting the tone for a slower, more atmospheric day.

For lunch, try local favorite Naruto and their signature zangi—Hokkaido’s take on karaage. From there, wander through Sakaimachi Street, where glassware studios, small boutiques, and offbeat museums give the area its distinctive character.

In the evening, settle in for sushi along Otaru Sushi Street, known for its fresh local seafood and relaxed coastal feel.

Spend the day exploring Hokkaido’s past with a visit to the Hokkaido Museum and the open-air Historical Village, offering a glimpse into life on the island across different eras.

In the afternoon, keep things flexible—either explore at your own pace or visit Shiroi Koibito Park, a whimsical chocolate factory and café tied to one of Hokkaido’s most iconic sweets.

Come evening, head into Susukino and experience Sapporo’s after-dark side, with an izakaya-hopping experience that weaves through local spots, small plates, and drinks in a lively, social setting.

Take an early train to Asahikawa, then continue by private car into the scenic countryside of Biei. Visit the surreal Blue Pond and the volcanic landscapes around Shirogane Onsen, surrounded by waterfalls and lush forest.

For a more active option, a full-day cycling route through Biei’s rolling hills can also be arranged.

Back in Asahikawa, finish your trip with a final bowl of Hokkaido ramen—this time in the region’s signature shoyu style—at the city’s well-known Ramen Village.

End the evening at your own pace: a quiet walk along the Ishikari River, or a relaxed final night out in town.
